Saving Water Tips

Did you know that in Britain the average person will use 141 litres of water per day!

If you are on a water meter- saving water can help reduce your bill. It can also help reduce your energy use and bills, and reduce the impact of your local environment.

Check for leaks:

· A leaking tap can waste between 1000-2000 gallons of water a year!

· A leaking toilet can waste around 500 gallons of water a day!

Dishwashers

· Did you know it takes more water to wash up your dishes by hand than it does to use a dishwasher.

· Do not rinse your plates before putting them in the dishwasher- just scrape the food from plates and leave it to the dishwasher.

· Only run the dishwasher when full.

Taps and Showers

· You can find water efficient shower heads which can produce water flows that feel a lot higher pressure than they are. These new types of shower heads are best used on a power or mixer shower.

· Fit a flow regulator to showers and aerators to taps which helps regulate the water without affecting how it feels to use.

· New taps that offer lower flow can be fitted in bathrooms and kitchens.

· Showers are a lot more water saving friendly than a bath- a bath uses up to 80 litres whereas a shower uses around 46 litres. Though you can get shallow baths now which help save water for bath users.

· Reducing your daily shower from 10 minutes to around 4 minutes can save more than 300 litres of water every week.

Gas Safety Tips

Unsafe gas work and poorly maintained gas appliances pose a serious risk to you . Please view below to see how you can keep safe around gas appliances.

Use a Gas Safe registered engineer:

Remember to use a gas safe registered engineer when it comes to gas work, otherwise you are putting yourself at risk to an unsafe gas appliance!

Check your engineers Gas Safe Id card so you know they are qualified to do the gas work they'll be carrying out.

All our engineers are gas safe registered and will happily show you their Gas Safe ID card.

Get your appliances checked:

Every gas appliance should be checked every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer, for example you may get your boiler serviced but what about your gas cooker or gas fire? If your gas appliance starts to malfunction it could cause a serious risk to your health and even your life!

Any gas appliance in your home can produce carbon monoxide which is an odourless and invisible highly poisonous gas which occurs when natural gas or LGP doesn't burn properly. This could be a result of a gas appliance being improperly fitted, repaired or maintained or when outlets such as flues and vents get blocked.

The risk of an unsafe gas appliance could cause a gas leak which can cause fires or explosions and can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon Monoxide:

CO Poisoning

CO poisoning symptoms are similar to a flu, food poisoning, fatigue and a hangover which can have complications on your health/life.

The six main symptoms to look out for are

Headaches
Dizziness
Nausea
Breathlessness
Collapse
Loss of consciousness

Being aware of the symptoms could save your life- also look out for symptoms that occur only at home but disappear when you leave and others in the household experiencing similar symptoms.

Signs of a carbon monoxide leak?

Floppy yellow or orange flame on your gas hob, rather than a crisp blue flame.
Dark, sooty staining around or on your gas appliance.
Pilot lights that frequently blow out
Increased condensation inside windows

I nstalling an accredited carbon monoxide leak detector in your home will help you stay safe, as they emit a sound when CO is detected. However because an alarm only activates when there is CO present, you should never rely on them as prevention.

Make sure the alarm you buy is marked EN 50291 and has the British Standards Kitemark.

Landlords and Gas Safety:

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 outline your duties as a landlord to make sure all gas appliances, fittings, chimneys and flues are safe and efficient.

Gas Safety Checks- to ensure your tenants safety all gas appliances and flues need to undergo an annual gas safety check which will provide you with a Landlord Gas Safety Record.
Gas Safety Record- you will need to provide a record of the gas safety check to you tenants.
Maintenance- you need to ensure all gas pipework, appliances, chimneys and flues are kept in a safe conditions

Why is my radiator cold?

Don't you just love waking up on a cold morning to a warm comfy house- but if your radiators are not heating up as efficiently as they should be you might wake up a little chilly. There are several reasons your radiators might not be working, see below for the most common reasons.

Common reasons why radiators are not working:

Thermostat is set too low.
The time isn't working.
Radiator valve is closed.
Air pockets in the system.
Blockages within the system.
Circulation fault.

Why is my radiator cold at the bottom?

When the radiator is cold at the bottom it is likely due to a blockage that is restricting the circulation of hot water to the whole radiator. Usually this is a result of sludge and debris build up which is caused by the metal and pipes reacting with oxygen and water over time. If you live in a hard water area lime scale can also build up in the system.

A power flush can help clean your radiator and remove the blockage and dirt in your system.

Why is one radiator cold when the heating is on?

If one radiator is cold when the heating is on, this could be a result of air stuck in the system.

Firstly check that the valve is open as sometimes it can be quite simply that the valve has been closed meaning no hot water is going to reach the radiator.

If the valve is open then we can assume it is an air lock- luckily the solution is quite simple : bleed you radiator.

How to bleed your radiator

How to bleed your radiator.

If your radiators are not heating up properly or they have cold spots, they might just need bleeding:

Radiators need bleeding when air is trapped inside them which stops the water circulating around your radiator.
If your radiators are noisy, making a gurgling or banging noise, they might need bleeding too.

What you will need:

A radiator key
A cloth/ rag to catch any water

Turn on the central heating to allow pressure to build up in the system
Identify which radiators need bleeding by feeling for cold spots or listen for a gurgling sound. Take care when touching the radiator as they will be hot.
Switch off the heating and wait for the radiators to cool down.
Prepare the area by placing old towels underneath the radiator to protect the flooring.
Insert the bleed/ radiator key into the bleed valve. Turn the valve slowly anticlockwise. You should head a hissing sound which is the trapped air coming out. Use your cloth to catch any water that comes out.
Retighten the valve when the hissing stops and liquid is coming out.
Check the pressure of your heating system by looking at the gauge on your boiler. Bleeding radiators can cause the pressure to drop. Top up the pressure if necessary.
Check to see if your radiator(s) are heating up properly, by feeling to see if the heat is spreading evenly throughout the radiator.

A small bathroom can be tricky when it comes to design. One main factor being small bathrooms have limited space and no one wants a cramped bathroom, therefore we need to use some tricks to help create a spacious are in a limited space.

A small bathroom could be the main bathroom, en-suite or cloakroom.

Here are some tips that we use when it comes to designing a small bathroom:

When floor space is limited consider wall hung toilets and basin units to help maximise the floor space. In addition to this you could consider floating units. Keeping the floor space open helps create an illusion the bathroom Is bigger.

A lot of furniture brands offer a slimline/ small bathroom furniture range. This is a great option to allow for storage in a smaller bathroom without taking up too much space.

In a smaller bathroom getting the most out of storage is important, therefore consider the available spaces where units can go. For example, the space above the toilet- this space often goes to waste when it can offer you room for a cabinet above.

There are so many options when it comes to tiling and a good thing to remember is that the more grout lines the smaller the bathroom will feel. Look at bigger tiles and lighter grout colours to reduce the line visibility.

Lighting is essential to create the illusion of a bigger room with a small space. To help increase lighting you could look at maximising your mirror to allow the light to bounce off. Another clever option with mirrors to help maximise your bathroom space, is a recessed mirror cabinet which looks flat to the wall. This offers a great space saving storage solution.

With a smaller space the colour scheme is an important factor. Dark colours will make the room feel smaller, where as light, neutral, bright colours will help make the space feel bigger.

When looking at the shower units you could look at clear shower enclosures such as a frameless style to help create a bigger space illusion. You could also replace shower curtains with clear shower screens when your showering area is shared with the bath- this allows more light in.

This is a big NO!

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 explains that any gas work such as installations, servicing, maintaining/ repairs must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

If you decided to undertake any gas work yourself you are putting your self in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, explosions, and fires. Therefore, it is recommended you never undertake any work that involves a gas appliance.

World Plumbing Day

March 11 is World Plumbing Day.

Plumbing is a major part of our everyday routine such as having a shower, getting a glass of water from a tap and flushing the toilet. All of these tasks are possible thanks to trained plumbers and advances in plumbing.

World Plumbing Day was set up by the World Plumbing Council and the aim of this day is to spread awareness about the importance of plumbing and plumbers in their role of protecting the public health and improving access to clean water and sanitation.

Why is Plumbing important?

Plumbing is the job of working with pipes, plumbing fixtures, water and gas systems and is the one system you could not do without in your home. Plumbing keeps your house and yourself clean and hygienic.

Without plumbing there would not be any water supply to your house so that means no drinking water, no hot water to shower in, no gas for cooking or keeping your house warm and no flushing toilets.

Why do we need Plumbers?

Plumbing is regulated and these regulations are important as many areas of the industry can be dangerous such as sewage and waste that contain harmful bacteria etc. Plumbers are trained to handle the waste correctly and they also protect the serious danger of water contamination which could be caused through damaged waste pipes or wrong connections.

The plumbing regulations also ensure that the water in your hot water tank is at a sufficient temperature to prevent dangerous bacteria.

Plumbers also work with valves where they need to limit the temperature of the water coming out from the shower to ensure it doesn't cause burns or scalding.

Working in Houlton

We are glad to be able to offer our services to our new neighbours at Houlton.

We udnerstand that when moving to a new area finding a new plumber can be difficult. Since the development of the Houlton estate, we have been gaining a lot of new customers and have been building up our reputation in the area.

A lot of our initial work at Houlton consisted of appliance servicing and since then we have been returning with appliance breakdowns and other plumbing works. A lot of our new customers here find us through word of mouth and referrals.

Rugby Town Football Club and Academy Sponsorship

Following the start up of the Rugby Football Town Academy, we were approached by our friend Liam O’Neill who is the Academy Manager to see if we would be interested in sponsoring them.

The Rugby Football Town Academy offers a full time football/education BTEC scholarship for 16-19 year olds who wish to continue their education whilst training and playing for Rugby Town.

Of course we jumped at this chance to support the local community and the young men and women who are training to play professional football. We help the academy with kit and match balls when they need them.

Dave is a lover of football himself and enjoys watching the team play at the Rugby Town Football Club, Butlins Road, and he can't wait to get back there.

Keep an eye out for some new Adroit signage on the grounds.

Adroit Services and The Bell Inn - free school meals.

Supporting the local community with free school meals...

We were so proud how our local community pulled together following the rejection of a motion for provide free school emails to children over the holidays.

We thought about how we could help and offered our local pub The Bell Hillmorton a donation to help them with distributing free meals for families in the local area.

The Bell Hillmorton amazingly supported 13 families with 39 meals with the help of us and the local community!
